Navigating the intricate landscape of child protection and gender-based violence (GBV), IHS Ethiopia has been a stalwart presence in Ethiopia for almost 13 years. In the face of crises and displacement, our unwavering commitment extends across regions, including Tigray, Afar, and Amhara, where we have persistently expanded our child protection programs. Central to our mission is the promotion of psychosocial well-being through comprehensive initiatives, ranging from community-based protection mechanisms to case management services, alternative care arrangements, and specialized psychosocial support. Collaborating with key partners such as UNICEF, UNHCR, SIF, UK AID, EU, RRM/BHA, and LUMOS, we actively respond to the evolving needs of displaced populations, ensuring our interventions are adaptive, impactful, and rooted in the rights of every child.
As advocates for the right to live free from abuse, exploitation, and violence, we emphasize community empowerment through robust collaborations, awareness-raising activities, and the establishment of emergency child-friendly spaces (CFS). The impact of our work goes beyond statistics, reaching over 98,515 children who have accessed safe spaces for socializing, play, and learning. Looking ahead, our commitment remains steadfast as we adapt our response strategies to evolving circumstances, striving to boost resilience and create a protective environment where every child’s well-being is prioritized.
Psychosocial Support for Vulnerable Children and Youth
At IHS, we recognize the intricate challenges faced by children and youth in crisis situations, particularly in Ethiopia. Our Child Protection/GBV initiatives are designed to address the multifaceted risks faced by vulnerable groups, including orphaned and trafficked children, victims of child labor, and survivors of physical and sexual abuse.
In collaboration with local communities and stakeholders, our programs provide essential psychosocial support, aiming to alleviate the distress experienced by children and youth exposed to conflict, displacement, and other crises. The outbreak of COVID-19 has further heightened protection risks, necessitating targeted interventions to address the changing dynamics of child protection in these challenging times.
Case Management Services for Enhanced Child Well-being
Effective case management is at the core of our commitment to the well-being of children in crisis. Our Child Protection/GBV programs offer comprehensive case management services, identifying and addressing the unique needs of each child. From unaccompanied minors to those facing neglect and deprivation, we strive to ensure that no child is left without proper care and support.
Informed by a participatory approach, our case management services extend to include child and youth committees, networks, and community-based child protection mechanisms. These initiatives are vital in not only preventing child protection risks but also in building resilient communities capable of safeguarding their children.
Empowering Communities through Alternative Care Arrangements
In Ethiopia, where harmful traditional practices, child marriage, and abduction of girls persist, our programs actively promote alternative care arrangements that prioritize the safety and well-being of children. By working closely with communities and leveraging existing capacities within refugee settlements, we aim to create environments where children can thrive and grow.
Our approach encompasses not only immediate interventions but also long-term strategies to address the root causes of child protection concerns. Through community-based child protection initiatives, we empower local structures to play an active role in safeguarding their children, ensuring that protection is not just a service but a shared responsibility.
